RUNUO Irc Network Updated
Thursday, Jan 27, 2005, at 07:50 AM
From RUNUO:
We've updated the RunUO IRC network and added another server to it. This wasnt a load change as much as it was a redundancy change. Just adding to the mix to get things going.

irc.runuo.com now does round robin DNS to our two servers which are:

se.runuo.com
aos.runuo.com

Both servers are actually located in Texas. We will be adding more servers as we go, we just needed to get the initial config hammered out.

RUNUO Update, On Subscriptions
Wednesday, Jan 26, 2005, at 07:56 AM
From RUNUO:
We have decided to make a change to our subscription model to simplify everything.

Subscriptions will be migrated to 1 type, which will be lifetime, and the cost will be knocked down to just 25.00 (US).

The benifits will remain the same.

Now, onto the part of this that will be controversial.

We have not yet decided how we will handle the older subscriptions, so we will be trying to come up with a way to handle it.

My thought process is all of the old subscriptions go away and if they want they can get a new one, some people think that is unfair, but its not meant to be unfair, my thinking is I cant do it for the 1 month/6 month'ers and do it for the 1 year guys because its doing it for some but not others.

Your constructive help on this will be appreciated. Please keep in mind we did ask you guys to not subscribe until 1.0.0 was out and things were cleared up.

We will be adding a check in the next couple of days that removes all ads from the site for subscribers

You can chat with us on irc.runuo.com in #runuo or even make your own shard a chat channel to hang out in. We currently house a few good size channels for shards, so you all are more than welcome to come.

Well, I Gate It My Best Shot

Ryan from RUNUO wrote the following:
As of about 2 hours ago, the decision was made by my spinal doctor that it is time for me to go ahead with surgery. I was presented 2 options, basically having the 5th and 6th vertabre in my neck fused, or having an artificial disc put in between them.

The artificial disc treatment is still considered 'experimental' therefore if I chose that route my career in the Marines would be over. That being said I have opted for the fusion surgery.

Basically this surgery involves taking some bone from a cadaver and placing it inbetween the vertabre in my neck where the disc used to be, and then holding it in place with a metal bracket. The vertabrae would then fuse together by growing into the bone from the cadaver.

The procedure is pretty much as risk free as it could be for someone my age.

The actual risks are being paralyzed, disfunctional swallowing or a 'hoarse voice' for the rest of my life.

My date for the surgery has not yet been scheduled, when I find it out I will be sure to let you guys know but I should at that time have some time to spend with the RunUO community as I will be laid up pretty much for 2-3 weeks. For those of you who know me, being laid up like that is pretty much going to be the worst thing to ever happen to me.

I am still trying to save up the money to get a laptop so that I can at least get online and play some UO with you guys or something.

This being said for right now I am putting the test center on hold and will be getting back to you guys on it when I get the chance.

Thanks, Ryan

RUNUO To Go Open Source?
Monday, May 17, 2004, at 06:50 AM
Last week this thread started by asking the RUNUO users what they felt about RUNUO going Open Source:

http://www.runuo.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36593
One of the biggest questions, a lot of people have asked for it though no one has given us a valid reason for the need.

We, the RunUO Development team are contemplating, the open sourcing of RunUO's core. The opensource movement has been an absolute disgusting plague to a lot of projects, especially projects the size of RunUO. I am an avid open source supporter... work on a few projects, am a Sourceforge donator, so dont start in with the I hate opensource crap, because it just ain't true.

I am willing to consider, valid opinions on this thread about the pros and cons of opensourcing the core to RunUO.

We arent worried about project fragmentation becuase the license we are considering wouldnt totally allow that

Anyway, please feel free to discuss and vote on the poll.

Thanks for your time!
With a little poking around on Source Forge, I found this:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/runuo/

Check the RUNUO boards for more information as to whether this project will actually go Open Source.

RUNUO Selling Subscriptions?
Wednesday, Feb 25, 2004, at 02:48 AM
RUNUO is now going subscription? From RUNUO:
Subscriber Benefits:
Signatures
Avatars
Yellow Page Access
Invisible Mode
Larger private message space
Subscriber based forums
Special user ranks
More to come...

These things aren't solidly written in stone; we are working through them and will be adding things to this as we go.

The subscription rate is 2.00 US per month. I don’t want to hear a single complaint that you cannot afford this, hell even a kid can save that in a week with change from lunch. Don’t buy a Big Mac one time and you have 2.00.

By subscribing to these forums you will notice increased help from our team of script guru’s to get your scripts completed. We will be dedicating some resources to helping users get requests filled, but will make no guarantee on anything.

Look forward to many additions to the subscriber arena!

The why:

The reason behind this is simple. The RunUO users who are serious about RunUO, and care about RunUO deserve to use these features, but the minority of people on this site make that an impossible thing to allow. This puts us in a position where if you really do like RunUO you can come up with roughly 25 dollars a year to utilize these features and get some priority help with your custom scripts. All of the proceeds of RunUO subscriptions will go toward the bills we encounter with RunUO (hosting/software/hardware/mt dew/beer).

Thanks a bunch guys!

EGoUO, Knocking Egos Down A Peg
Monday, Feb 23, 2004, at 07:31 AM
Following site was sent to me Friday night. Looks like someone has an axe to grind.
EgoUO is a revolution in the runUO UO emulator community. In less than a month, EgoUO has become the most widely used runuo watchdog website on the internet. Members of the dev team have delivered countless ego trips to innocent members of the runuo community. Time and again a developer has proven he can act like a child throwing a tantrum if he can't have his own way. He continues to show that he can't accept anyone making him look like a fool. He does an excellent job of "owning" people on the internet sites/servers that he has control of because that is the ONLY place he can. Sad.

Some of the developers of runuo are currently the most childish people in the UO server emulation community available to end users around the world. Couple that with their unprecedented ego trips and they virtually dominate being the biggest dickheads around. So enjoy this site and email us any stories you have about your run-ins with runuo developers.

This is all available to everyone on the Internet for absolutely no cost at all. This site is also protected by "fair use" laws because it is a parody of runuo. Read the terms of use below.

RUNUO Warfare - Stopping Hacks
Tuesday, Feb 3, 2004, at 07:30 AM
Ryan posted the following on the RUNUO Forums:
Ok, this is going to be a long drawn out post, so bear with me right off the bat.

So here I am minding my own business and I have to start hearing this bullshit about how RunUO is vulnerable to being hacked. "LiGhT" (gotta love that elite spelling) from the Defiance shard, posted this image on January 23, 2004:

Quote:
Well I found a intresting program today which explains how some people are being hacked.

It's nothing to do with Defiance it's to do with your passwords:

This is what they call brute force hacking when a program tries every login and password possible till they find matches.

I really don't understand how someone has been so bored to make a brute forcer for free shards, let alone the people who use it.

To avoid this happing to you please set a complicated password. I.E. if your password is Defiance

Try: d3f1anc3

Easier to remember if you know 3 = E , 1 = i etc.

For example my password is over 6 characters long and is no type of word at all, it's just a alpha numerical password i've taught myself to remember and the chances to guess it are 1 out of millions.

If you value your account please do the same.
You can read the full text which is both non-stimulating and boring at:

http://defiance.0wnsyou.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=976

Shortly thereafter the owner of Shardwire decides hes elite and posts this:

Quote:
RunUO Warfare is a brute force password cracking program designed to crack accounts on UO Free Shards. The one who created it, Robin, has apparently distributed this program to a group of people, who are attempting to hack accounts as I write this article. Two people who are allegedly in possession of RunUO Warfare, and have carried out attacks on other shards, are known as "Mystic" and "m0rtis".

Robin apparently holds a grudge against the UOGamers Shard because Phantom and Asyre are telling people that he can't script, and that he wasn't very influential in the development of UOGamers. Robin was on the RunUO Development staff 11 months ago, which was in charge of the RunUO test shard. However, he was fired for a reason that he believed ludicrous.

After a half-hour conversation in the #RunUO IRC channel, Phantom banned Robin from the chatroom because Robin said that he was leading a group of people who were cracking RunUO Shard accounts. Robin then used a known phpbb exploit to hack the UOGamers Forum and delete all the threads, as well as some member accounts and forum categories. He left a post in the only forum category that was left, "Discuss Robin." The message he left said something to the effect of "This is all because of you, Phantom."

Mortis later entered the #RunUO channel. Phantom confronted him about his alleged hacking, but Mortis flatly denied the claim by Robin that he had been hacking, stating that someone was probably posing as Mortis.

At one point Ryan of RunUO shut down the UOGamers Shard and the servers for UOGamers.com and RunUO.com in order to prevent further hacking by Robin. The forums were restored, but have been reverted to 1/19/04. Expect the shard to be down until about 7 p.m. CST. Ryan has asked that people not ask questions about what happened, as they are very busy right now trying to fix the damage done by Robin.

The RunUO team is planning on ruining the ability of RunUO Warfare to hack passwords with the release of RunUO Beta 37. Until then, however, all RunUO shards that use Beta 36 and previous will be vulnerable to RunUO Warfare. My best advice is to make sure your account password is long enough, such as twelve to sixteen characters long, to make brute force hacking a much more lengthy process.
Both using the same image and Shardwire calling it RunUO Warfare.

This in fact is NOT RunUO Warfare.

RunUO Warfare was developed by Robin a former member of UO Gamers and is a console based application that is much more involved than the 'ghost application'.

The RunUO Team has both programs, and we also have the source code to RunUO Warfare. We have put measures in place to block this program and its attacks in RunUO's core for the next release.

The bottom line is this.

If you users use the same password on another shard, or use a simple password then they are at fault, not RunUO.

Period. End.

FrontEnd For RUNUO Updated

Posted on the RUNUO Forums:

Zippy was kind enough to give me the source for FrontEnd, so that I could update it some.

Changes:
  • Much of hte source rewritten using SharpDevelop, since #Dev didn't like the VS.NET project/resource files :/
  • Fixed some existing functions (add account, login authorisation response, DateTime reception).
  • Added a function for viewing banned/empty/online accounts.
  • Added a page for viewing online clients. You may also ban/firewall them from here.
  • Added a commands page. This page has shutdown/restart with the option to save. Also has a shard-wide broadcast function.
  • Firewall page. You may add/view/remove firewall entries on the server.
I think that's it. This will not work with the existing RemoteAdmin package, you must download the new one, which is also on my site.

This tool allows you to modify all maps and make changes on a tile by tile basis. Click on any area of the world map to display a tiled display. Click on a tile to display the current altitude and image settings. Make any neccessary changes to the tiles altitude and reselect an tile image.

Changes that you make are saved the mapdif files, so your original map is never altered.

Enjoy!

Ryan Responds To Project Open Source RUNUO
Tuesday, Jun 3, 2003, at 11:42 AM
From the POSR Forums:
Sly (and company),

I thought I would take the time to come over here and try to understand exactly what you are trying to do, what your goals are, what your motives are and why on earth it is that your taking a project that Krrios Myself and others have spent so much time working on and trying to not only make it your own but give it away taking credit for it.

I have honestly tried to read as much of the posts here and on our website's forums to understand the situation as best I can, however I am at a loss for what really is motivating this blatant attack on the RunUO Development Team. One thing I have always hated in the emulation world is the "official" this and that and the other. I have noticed in the past few days that a lot of our users are staring to say that we are the "official" version and its truly upsetting to me. They don’t need to call it that, we are the only version.

While I can understand your desire to create your own RunUO support website, or perhaps even your own emulator, it absolutely does not justify you saying your "copyrighting" the name RunUO. RunUO is not only already copyrighted, but it’s also trademarked. You can verify that with the US Patent and Trademark office if you’d like. Inquires typically run about 80 dollars per hour of research.

If you simply want to create a RunUO website and script site, I have no issue at all with that, and gladly welcome you to supporting the largest community around. I welcome the aid in supporting our users, and my wallet. If this support site draws attention away from RunUO.com that doesn’t hurt my feelings one bit, watching the bandwith usage top terabits of data per month racks up money really fast.

If you are truly going to move forward with attempting to copyright the RunUO name, and releasing RunUO as your own product I will be truely dissapointed in you. I dont want to discuss legalities just for the fact that it shouldnt be necessary. If a "man to man" approach does not hold any value to you, a "developer to developer" approach certainly should.

What I ask of you is this. Abide by our EULA...
  1. Do not offer RunUO's core components for download.
  2. Do not act as if your going to open source a project that is not yours to open source.
  3. Enjoy the product that we have put together for everyones use. We do not expect anything in return for the use of RunUO other than abiding by a few simple rules in our EULA
  4. Stop trying to run one of our developers off of our project. Your consistant attempts at ruining his image are at best annoying to me.

You have said many times in your own website that you respect Krrios and Myself, but you dont like the other guys from the RunUO Development Team. If thats the case, show that you have the common courtesy that all developers should have for each other and dont attempt to hijack our project.

We too were unsatisfied at one time with all of the emulators and server packages out there, so we decided it was time to do our own. If you are truly that unsatisfied with the way that RunUO works you can easily do what we have done and create your own product (especially with as many developers as you have, and their outrageous skill levels that you talk about) in less than 90 days. Its not like you have to reverse engineer the protocols, or do any of the hard work, its all done for you, all you need to do is write your own code, not hijack someone else’s.

Quite honestly I can remember when I was in your position, part of a project that I liked a lot but was not fond of the direction it was going. What did I decide to do? Step out, and get things going in the right direction with a new project, new team and create RunUO. If you truly were trying to "help" the community that you think is in such despair you wouldn’t be doing it by trying to steal RunUO, you would be doing it by conversing with myself and or Krrios about what needs to be done, helping the users on the website, submitting bugs and fixes or general ideas that could improve RunUO.

All I ask is that you take into consideration what your doing, and bring this matter to some sort of closure that is amicable to both sides with as little bitching as possible. It does no one any good to try to take someone else’s work, and truthfully you just pull the time that I should be spending working on RunUO away to come here, register on your forums and try to speak with you on some sort of reasonable level.

I hope that you find that I have taken the time to leave out the flame bait, sarcasm name calling and legal threats and have just provided you with facts, and one developers plea to another developer to see things as they should be seen. All in all, if you want to truly help RunUO, work with us, not against us.

RUNUO Continues To Suffer Legal Woes
Monday, May 19, 2003, at 06:13 AM
A couple of weeks ago the story broke that RUNUO "was not an original work and therefore is not protected under the exclusive rights of the US Copyright Law."

Instigators of the RUNUO breakoff was from the Archeronne RUNUO Shard. In a latest news post, Archeronne has set up a new website called Project Open Source RUNUO or POSR. There forums have been set up to set RUNUO as an open source project.

Some of the hottest topics can be found here:

http://opensourcerunuo.tcpgaming.net/forums//index.php?s=7cf5c55cfb6fcd110519d6ec5a74a077andact=SFandf=11

Meanwhile, Zippy and others from RUNUO continue to debate with the Admins of POSR with regards to the legality of such a bold move by the POSR team. Visit the General Chat forums here to see most of the legal mudslinging:

http://opensourcerunuo.tcpgaming.net/forums//index.php?s=7cf5c55cfb6fcd110519d6ec5a74a077andact=SFandf=10

Most if not all Ultima Online Emulators have branched off and created new projects. Could this mean that RUNUO now will split into two factions and head in two different directions?

Who knows.

Found this on Archeronne RUNUO Shard:
I've copywritten the name "RunUO" and applied for property protection over the server source code. Soon RunUO will no longer exists as you know it, but as a community supported open source program as it should be. This is will handled through a new forum board and much better support program than the currently lame runuo dev guys. Ive put together a team of solid, expereinced game programmers with over 40 retail games to their credits. If you are interested in helping out, drop me an email.

RUNUO Soon To Be Back On Track

Ryan is currently in Kuwait ready to be shipped back to the states. He'll be back home and in charge of RUNUO within the next few weeks. Meanwhile, he has set in motion the changeover to save the RUNUO website from future problems. He writes from Kuwait:
I have made arrangements to get RUNUO.COM on a dedicated server with Verio. Alk is working out the details and my friend will be assisting Alkiser in the move to get everything up and running.

In the mean time, I dont know that Alk has any real hope of getting the site up but, once its back up bandwith will not be a problem. We are moving into Verios colocation center which provides a top notch host, yet again.

Thanks for helping me find out about the problem so that we could get a solution worked up (even while I am in Kuwait). Thank god the war is over or I wouldnt have been able to help.
Can't wait to have you back Ryan!

RUNUO Looking For New Host
Tuesday, Apr 15, 2003, at 06:11 AM
Zippy posted the following concerning RUNUO's dilemma concerning hosting:
More Information:

I recieved several emails asking for more info about bandwidth and space.

runuo.com does not require a large amount of space, probably less than 200mb.

RunUO.com has averaged 170,00 hits per day so far for the month of April. This translates to somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 gb of bandwidth per day. We have already taken a few measures to lower bandwidth (such as removing the .NET framework download).

In March, RunUO.com had 5078667 hits, for a total of 77751153kb bandwidth. So, For those interested in figures, we would need around 50 to 75 gb of bandwidth, the .NET framework accounted for a large portion of our usage, so without that these #s will be a bit lower. However runuo is growing ever more popular, so these #s will continue to rise.

Our temporary solution will be to move runuo to a business cable modem in order to keep it up while we try to find a host that can meet our needs.

RUNUO Getting Booted From ISP - Bandwidth Hog

Looks like the RUNUO site is in trouble:
We will have to be moving hosts for RunUO.com soon, currently we do not have a good enough replacement host. In the month of april, by april 10th we had 1.5 million hits, with over 65 thousand downloads. Thats in 10 days in april.

With march we had 5 Million, with 2 Million downloads, and 77751153 kbytes of usage. Thats almost 163 thousand hits a day.

Our current host can no longer support the website. We have few choices. We will be keeping you updated on this situation.

We have begun taking donations via paypal to help us pay for a new host. If you would like to donate, use this address:

Updates On Ryan (Retalin)

Alkiser posted the following update about Ryan from RUNUO. If you fail to remember, Ryan was shipped out to the war in Iraq. I'm thankful of Alkiser to post this because there isn't a day I wonder how Ryan is doing and if he's OK over there.
For all of you who do not know, Ryan is my brother.

Note to all, nothing bad about him has been reported.

I would just like to state to everyone who has worried about him that to my knowledge he is fine. He sent some pictures home and he is very upbeat in all of his letters. He sent me a birthday card (simple peice of paper) on my birthday. He says he is safe, and feels he will be home in June/July.

I will try my best to update this when ever I receive word. I am sorry to anyone who may think I shrug off the question of how he is, when I am asked in IRC or on AIM. I would just prefer not talk or think about it.

I am also locking this topic.
